Again, it auto starts after login and remains in the background with a little status menu icon. Profiles (or favorites as they call them) can also be auto applied under various conditions. This is handy as you could make a profile for browsing, video editing and gaming. You can change the readings between F and C degrees and even created speed profiles. It is by far the safest and most reliable fan modifier out there. Also, it will not let you set a min fan speed below the Apple defaults. This means the system can still regulate the speed if it got too hot as that would be a max speed. So why SMC? It only allows you to set minimum fan speeds. There is some debate in the Apple world about the need to alter fan speeds, but I personally have found this little gem to be a savour to keep the iMac under control in terms of temps, and prolong the life of its components. The second app is called 'SMC Fan Control' which is a popular fan speed modifier for apple systems. See post attachements for a picture of Temperature Gauge. You can have warnings posted when it reaches a certain temp and it will auto start in the background (no dock icon, just a menu bar icon) upon logon. Fan revs are also visible with health indicator bars (green, yellow, red). The app will also show a nice visual display of the temps with a marker showing the maximum it achieved. It shows temperatures for CPU cores, GPU, optical drives, LCD monitor and Hard Drives.

Having been a Windows PC user, I was not used to this and was later told that imacs do get hot as they disperse heat via its aluminum casing. I started looking for such an app when my iMac was extremely hot to touch. It is available from the App Store for a small fee of £2.99GBP / $4.68USD. The first app is called 'Temperature Gauge' by Tunabelly Software. I have only been a MAC user since June 2012, having replaced my Windows Desktop with a mid-2011 27" iMac.

4.There are two apps that I highly recommend for iMac and MacBookPro users. If, after un-checking all of the programs, the iMac starts up normally, then you can go through the individual programs to identify which is causing the freezing issue. These Login Items are the programs that launch when your iMac starts up. Go to System Preferences > Accounts, you can view the Login Items. The computer will then operate in Safe Mode. To enter Safe mode, turn on your iMac, hold the Shift key until you see the gray Apple logo. If your iMac continually freezes up during boot, you can operate in Safe Mode to troubleshoot the root issue. If your iMac reboots and functions normally upon restart, the issue may have been a temporary minor glitch. To do so, hold the power button for several seconds until the iMac shuts down.īy pressing the power button - as opposed to just unplugging the cord - the computer can safely restart. Then you will have to manually shut down your iMac. The quick force quit doesn’t work, your mouse won’t move either. In some cases, you may not be able to use the Force Quit option because that macOS is entirely frozen. If the screen freezes and continues to do so while you use this program, you may have to uninstall the app and reinstall it thereafter. To determine whether the app itself is faulty, start up the application again. The application will close if not, try to Force Quit out of it again.įorce Quit, however, does not solve the underlying issue the app may be causing your iMac to freeze.

Select the unresponsive app and then Force Quit in the bottom right corner. A window will display listing out all active applications. If this happens, you can use the keyboard shortcut for Force Quit: Command + Option + ESC. However, in some instances, the mouse may also be frozen and you might not be able to access Force Quit. You can also control-click on the app, press Option, and click on Force Quit. The iMac menu bar includes the Force Quit function. Force Quit will exit out of certain apps despite their unresponsiveness. If this is the case, use the “Force Quit” function to unfreeze your machine. Your iMac can hang up because of a piece of software. The spinning rainbow pinwheel is usually an indication of the Mac system lagging.
